Richie hosted a live streamed DJ and drawing event in aid of brain tumour research. Name Richie Cumming Cause fundraised for Glioma Cellular Genetics Resource (Institute of Genetics and Cancer) Method of fundraising Twelve hour live streamed DJ marathon featuring drawing challenges for viewers Image Why did you decide to fundraise for your chosen cause? My childhood friend has a brain tumour. He has been creating a series of comic books that help explain what life is like living with cancer. As well as his comics, he’s also been organising exhibitions of his work and I’ve been helping him with his exhibitions. It was his idea to raise money for this essential research. How did you raise money? We both turned 40 this year, but sadly couldn’t have the parties we had planned due to the Covid-19 pandemic. So instead I decided to revive ‘Scribble’, a club night I used to run many years ago in Dundee, and live stream a 12 hour version from home. I was helped by my wife, Iona, and a load of artist friends who sent me drawing challenges to keep viewers interested. My laptop broke a few days prior to the event which meant I lost all of the set lists I had planned and could only use vinyl on the day, rather than mp3s, but it just added to the challenge and meant I pulled out records I hadn’t heard in years. It was that much fun that I’m going to do a shorter, monthly Scribble events, with maybe another longer charity one next year. And, if we beat this Covid virus, hopefully next year it can be in a pub or club rather than my living room! Fundraising wisdom Do something you enjoy, for a cause you believe in.
