Why did you decide to fundraise for your chosen cause?

I was diagnosed with stage 3 low grade serous ovarian cancer in October 2018.

Though grateful to the NHS for all they have done, it was a huge shock and terribly frightening to learn this is a chemo resistant cancer. After the surgery there was nothing else they could offer, other than six months of chemo and hormone blocking drugs.

I am raising funds for Professor Charlie Gourley and his team of researchers, as they are one of the only people in the world currently investigating this rare, but serious cancer.

How did you raise money?

I have had to retire from being a self-employed psychotherapist, as I am unable to continue to work as effectively as I would like.

I have enjoyed painting, drawing and making art for many years.  I thought raffling one of my paintings might be a fun and interesting way to raise money.

I decided to hold my raffle in September to coincide with gynaecological cancer awareness month. I set-up a JustGiving page, with a photograph of my paining 'Savernake Forest in the Spring', to allow people to buy raffle tickets online. I’m absolutely delighted by how generous people have been.

Fundraising wisdom

Know your limitations, but put your heart into it. Every penny counts and even though it feels strange to ask for money, many people really do want to help and this gives them an opportunity to do so.
