Caroline trekked the Inca Trail in honour of her daughter, Evie. Name Caroline Denham Cause fundraised for Labrune syndrome research Method of fundraising Trekking the Inca Trail Image Why did you decide to fundraise for your chosen cause? Our daughter Evie passed away in June 2020 aged just 12. She had Labrune syndrome. There is so little known about this condition and that is one of the biggest worries we, as parents, have. What is going to happen? How will this progress? How long do we have? Continued research is the only way that we are going to find this information and hopefully find some treatments along the way. Although it is too late for Evie, it is not too late for many other families. How did you raise money? I trekked the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu - a 4 day, 3 night trek at altitude. In order to train for this I went on lots of long walks, especially hilly ones! I don’t think you could ever do enough training for this trek – it was really hard. I suffered with the effects of altitude and really struggled to scale the highest point at 4,200m, but I did it, thanks to the help from the guides and the doctor, and especially the other people who had taken on the challenge of the trek for their own causes. The trek was incredibly hard physically, but also mentally and emotionally, but when we finished the trek at Machu Picchu it was incredible, we were all exhilarated! Fundraising wisdom Start your fundraising early, and make sure that you use social media to promote your cause, you can never post too may updates!
