Meet Manny, fourth year MA Spanish and History student Image Why did you choose the University of Edinburgh? The University of Edinburgh is one of the leading universities in the world for research, which is something I would eventually love to go into. Not to mention the city is beautiful to live in! Why did you choose your course and what do you like about it the most? I have always been fascinated by History and the way people lived differently and similarly to us in the past, it’s an incredible puzzle that we may or may never figure out. I’m also interested in people who are alive today and Spanish allows me to communicate with more people, as well as it being a beautiful language full of rich and diverse cultures. What’s your most fond of memory of Edinburgh so far? My fondest memory of Edinburgh so far was when I did the Scottish Half Marathon in September 2021. It was just outside of the city in Musselburgh, and the beautiful views of the sea whilst running and the support of the locals who handed out water and sweets made it an incredible experience! Why did you choose to become a student caller? I enjoy hearing about all the different things people have gone on to do since university because all stories are unique and beautiful, and I care about tackling social inequality. Being able to do both makes it quite a good-fitting job for me. What did you miss most? (from the cancelled campaigns last year) I’ve missed being able to personally talk to alumni and have a lovely conversation with them. What are you looking forward to in this year’s telethon campaign? I am looking forward to having great conversations with alumni again! What has been your experience talking to alumni of the university? My experience talking to alumni has been great! They are incredibly diverse in the stories they tell and the conversations we have, but a running factor has been that they are all highly driven, intellectual, and caring members of the university’s community. Any advice/quote/story from alumni that you found meaningful to you in any way? Please include explanation That anything is possible, careers are not set in stone, and opportunities can come at the strangest and best of times. Not just some, but most alumni I speak to have incredible stories about both their general lives and careers, many of which they would not have thought of when they were a student. That fills me with a lot of hope for my own future. What question do you wish you could ask alumni but are too scared to ask? How on Earth do you get on the housing ladder?
