Meet Jasmine, fourth year MA German and Linguistics student ... Image Why did you choose the University of Edinburgh? I loved how it was near the highlands and the sea for sailing, hiking and access to nature. It was also prestigious and I liked the Linguistics course and the flexibility and variety of the elective course system. Why did you choose your course and what do you like about it the most? I loved languages at school and the grammar analysis part of English Literature. I then did an EPQ at A-level and read some really interesting books about Linguistics which is when I found that this is where my interest lay. I did not have German A-level and regretted dropping it and Edinburgh gave me the chance to take it up again from Beginners level as part of my main degree programme. I also loved that Linguistics was taught alongside English Language and had many course options from both its more scientific side as well as historical or grammar based. I found that the option of doing 3 subjects in my first 2 years flexible, reassuring and that it would add interest and breadth to my studies. What I like most about my course is the amount of choice with courses and that I am able to specialize particularly in 3rd and 4th year plus the community feel and rapport within the German department. What’s your most fond of memory of living in Edinburgh so far? The torchlit procession as part of Hogmany. Why did you choose to become a student caller? I wanted to be part of helping to fundraise and felt I would be challenged and learn a lot of skills. What do you like most about being a caller? Hearing about alumni experiences which inspire me and are really interesting plus being able to help raise money for great causes. What did you miss most? (from the cancelled campaigns last year) Being in the office and the atmosphere of different conversations plus feeling like I had purpose and was adding to something valuable. What are you looking forward to in this year’s telethon campaign? Learning new skills and finding out how to call outside of the office plus about how much funds we can raise as well as hearing interesting stories from the alumni which may also help me to better define my own path and provide wisdom What has been your experience talking to alumni of the university? That they are really willing to help overall and want to hear about how things are now as well as comparing their own experiences. What questions do you wish alumni ask you that never gets asked? More about exactly where the funds will help or more about being a student caller or tips for my future sometimes.
