Rachel Gibson

Meet Rachel, second year Neuroscience student...

Why did you choose the University of Edinburgh?
Because I love the city, the arts and music here, the teaching is amazing and I was ready to move away from home
Why did you choose your course and what do you like about it the most?
I chose my course because I was really interested to learn more about how the brain and body work! I’ve loved learning about how diseases work and the intricacies of the body.
What’s your fondest memory of life in Edinburgh so far?
Going away with my society for a week last May, getting to know people better and perform with the EU wind band in Germany.
Why did you choose to become an Alumni Engagement and Fundraising Ambassador?
To get to chat with people! It’s a great opportunity to get to speak to so many alumni I’d never normally cross paths with, and a great form of part time work alongside my studies.
What do you like most about being part of the team?
Getting to work alongside people from such a wide range of different schools and different walks of life – everyone’s lovely!
What are you looking forward to in this year’s telethon campaign?
Hopefully chatting to alumni who work in the fields of science that I want to go into and get some advice.
What has been your experience talking to alumni of the university?
Lovely! Everyone I’ve spoken to has been really nice and happy to chat about their time at the University of Edinburgh.
Is there any advice/quote/story from alumni that you found meaningful to you in any way?
“There’s no such thing as too late to go into education.” – from chatting with an alumnus about the Centre for Open Learning and how he came back to University and education after time away.
What question do you wish you could ask alumni but are too scared to ask?
I’d like to ask them how they find themselves in such successful roles and what advice they would give for going into the world of work.
What questions do you wish alumni ask you that never gets asked?
What has been your favourite memory of your time in Edinburgh? I’m always willing to chat about my time here!
